The Pilates School

While popularly attributed to Confucious, this phrase is actually modern in origin - written by an advertising copy writer in the 1920s.  However it's sentiment - that a complex idea can be conveyed with a single image - is universal across most cultures since recorded time. 

Joe Pilates left a limited archive of moving and still pictures - and many of these are owned and copyrighted by the U.S Pilates Association, available only as part of their teacher training program. 

Luckily, we have numerous 2nd and 3rd generation teachers to help us absorb the finer points of classical Pilates....

Peter Fiasca -  A student of 1st generation teachers Romana Krysnowska and Jay Grimes, Peter's videos are a library must for all serious classical Pilates students and teachers.  Several teacher training programs use them as part of the curriculum, and I have referenced them when in doubt or just looking for some inspiration or a different cue.   The magic circle mat DVD and a Magic Circle are the perfect vacation companions - and easily packed!

Alycea Ungaro - As a Romana trained teacher and physical therapist, Alycea offers a classical foundation with a contemporary twist and solid science.  She's an active blogger and a true innovator in the Pilates world.   Her "15 Minute Everyday Pilates" can keep your practice on track, no matter what your level.  And you'll see her in several of the Peter Fiasca videos referenced above.

Brooke Siler - Another Pilates leader trained by Romana, Brooke's celebrity clients are on the record praising her effectiveness in reshaping and strengthening their bodies.  Her DVD's were some of the first and are still some of the best.
