Lyn Wilkinson, owner of The Pilates School and quite possibly Joseph Pilates’ biggest fan (like, ever!), recently headed down to Florida for the winter with Adrian, the “other man” in her life (“other” than Joe Pilates, that is). Not surprisingly, one of the first things Lyn and Adrian did was find a Pilates studio where they can work out between sunning and funning. What did surprise Lyn was that while this studio provides great instruction, there isn’t really any kind of student assessment upon joining, or classes taught at various levels. Students just sign up online for the class they plan on attending and show up.
Maybe you’re thinking, “No biggie; aerobics classes are handled the same way.” True enough. But Pilates is a different kind of workout.
Originally called Contrology by Joe – he didn’t name Pilates after himself; that came later – the series of exercises he created are not about lifting the heaviest weights, or pedaling as fast as possible, for a more strenuous workout. They’re small, controlled moves meant to be done with precision and in a specific order. The exercises are also devised to improve the entire body. Where you may go to the gym to “do arms” one day and then “do back” the next, with Pilates you “do body” with each workout.
Sounds kind of confusing, doesn’t it? And you know what? If you’re new to Pilates, it can be, which is why we do a personal assessment with every new student before they join a group class. This helps us explain the basic building blocks of Pilates, and ensure that each person joins a group class that challenges them yet doesn’t feel overwhelming.
If you’re considering taking the first step to a healthier you with Pilates, a couple of private lessons at our studio can be a great jump start. The Pilates Launch Pack, five private lessons which are discounted for new students, is a terrific option.
The Pilates School is not the famed Gold’s Gym in Venice, CA, a see-and-be-seen kind of place teeming with Schwarzenegger wannabes. We offer a nurturing environment dedicated to providing effective Pilates instruction geared to each individual student’s need.
